‘A Veil of Invisibility’ is a 53 minute documentary exploring the life struggles of one of the most controversial Mexican American transsexuals and her social and personal successes. With an approximate two hundred and fifty surgical operations, some illegally performed by notorious doctors in various garages and filthy basements in Mexico to renowned surgeons in Hollywood, Monique has managed to achieve a successful career in the Department of Correctional Service of California and remains the longest standing civil servant transsexual in the United States.

The documentary explores notions of gender in modern society and the right to body autonomy. Featuring interviews by gender specialists in the UK, including the leading male to female sex change surgeon, Dr. James Bellringer from Charing Cross Hospital and Dominic Davies, the founder of Pink Therapy, the documentary provides an understanding of the physical and psychological distress experienced by transgender.
The appearance of pre-op transsexual Adele Adams, two generations younger than Monique, exposes the changes that the transsexual scene has gone through since the 70s, and reveals how boundaries have been pushed and clichés subverted, not only within the wider heteronormal society but also within the transgender culture itself.
