Hail the New Puritan

Charles Atlas is one of the premier interpreters of dance, theater and performance on video. Working in film, video, installation, theater and performance for over four decades, he has created works for screen, stage, gallery, and television. A pioneer in the development of media-dance, he has expanded this genre into an original new form, inventive pastiches of narrative and fictional modes with performance documentary. He has collaborated with very important figures of dance, art and performance such as Merce Cunningham (in the period of 1973-1981), Leigh Bowery, Marina Abramovic, Yvonne Rainer and many others.

Part documentary, part performance, ‘Hail the New Puritan’ was the first film to feature dancer and choreographer Michael Clark and his fledgling company, formed when he was in his early twenties after he quit Ballet Rambert.
